I- A divided spiritual world.

It is very difficult for human beings to naturally understand that the spiritual world is divided and that one of these parts is not to be trusted in any way, so God separated darkness from light. The Bible tells us through God’s characterization of some characters who were criticized and condemned by Him, that it all began with a being in that spiritual world created in the beginning among the so-called Heavens. That is to say that through characters such as that false deity called haylal (הֵילֵ֣ל)[1] or Itobaal III king of Tyre, that God speaks of a spiritual being whom they were imitating with their behavior and actions:

” How you are fallen from heaven, O Haylal, son of Sahar! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ But you are brought down to Sheol, to the far reaches of the pit. Those who see you will stare at you and ponder over you: ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms, who made the world like a desert and overthrew its cities, who did not let his prisoners go home?’ All the kings of the gentiles lie in glory, each in his own tomb; but you are cast out, away from your grave, like a loathed branch, clothed with the slain, those pierced by the sword, who go down to the stones of the pit, like a dead body trampled underfoot. You will not be joined with them in burial, because you have destroyed your land, you have slain your people. “May the offspring of evildoers nevermore be named! Prepare slaughter for his sons because of the guilt of their fathers, lest they rise and possess the earth, and fill the face of the world with cities.” (Isaiah 14:12–21).

” Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God: “You were the signet of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle; and crafted in gold were your settings and your engravings. On the day that you were created they were prepared. You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you. In the abundance of your trade you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned; so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God, and I destroyed you, O guardian cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I cast you to the ground; I exposed you before kings, to feast their eyes on you. By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your trade you profaned your sanctuaries; so I brought fire out from your midst; it consumed you, and I turned you to ashes on the earth in the sight of all who saw you. All who know you among the peoples are appalled at you; you have come to a dreadful end and shall be no more forever.” (Ezek 28:11–19).

This being called, among other names: Satan, is going to manipulate others, create situations, accidents and everything at hand to make the children of God stumble. The serpent in the garden of Eden was his first instrument against the fathers of mankind, Adam and Eve.

So, as has been said, it is because of that division in the spiritual world that you cannot trust any spiritual experience as if everything that comes from that world is genuine and good, just because it comes from that world. That is why the apostle John says, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits whether they are of God…” (1 Jn 4:1). That is why God gave us the TaNaK, the Apostolic Writings so that we could have a sure way to filter all experience with spiritual beings.

II- The strategy of deception.

The enemy also comes to us pretending to be a friend, so we must be very careful of those who are close to us, we must always evaluate in the light of Scripture whether they are sent or used by Satan or by God directly[2]. On the other hand, the temptation that is always evil will always make us believe that evil is actually good[3].

To understand your strategy, you also need to know what sin is. All that separates a creature from God and from those like them who live under the shadow of God, that is Sin. Notice that as a result of sin, Adam and Eve begin to distance themselves from each other and will also try to hide from the very Being who has made them and given them everything they are up to that moment[4]. Characteristics such as aloofness, hiding, and masking sincerity are very common in those who are ensnared by sin. They will always seek to blame others with murmurings and will assume attitudes of distancing themselves so as not to face the reality of their actions. It should be clear that the consequence of sin is spiritual death, eternal separation from God, and disaster for human life: “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom 6:23).

III- Process of the fall and promise of restoration.

When we look at everything that happened we realize that there will always be a process, and every bad response to a situation will bring a consequence until it leads the human being to do what he would never have imagined. It’s like a downhill fall that becomes unstoppable until you reach the end.

Eve eats of the fruit, gives it to her husband, and they both hide. God asks them if they ate from the forbidden tree, and Adam replies, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” the latter waokel (וָאֹכֵל) literally means “and I will eat.” So it is not a simple response from Adam, it is something more shocking that already demonstrates a shamelessness and total stubbornness; he tells God himself that he not only ate, but that he will continue to eat.

In spite of this, God’s mercy is so incomprehensibly great for human beings that even after this he will promise them, prophetically, a solution that would come in the future through the offspring of women. And notice that it does not say of man, but only of woman. That is, someone who would be born of a woman, but not of a man. So it would come by a miracle totally incomprehensible to the whole human race. This envoy, in the middle of a battle, would be in charge of putting an end to the macabre plan against God’s creation of those who serve Satan[5].

Sin grew among human beings to such an extent that God had to destroy that entire generation through a flood. Human beings must understand that God will never accept human evil and that just as he is willing to forgive it and change its reality from the very human essence through the miracle of regeneration, he is also willing to condemn and extirpate it when the weight of it merits it[6].

IV- Two parallel generations, one corrupt and the other that invokes God.

In the text you can find Lamech who is an example of this corrupt culture that not only inherits sin, but also cultivates it after Cain. He was the first to have two wives and his children begin to be the first “famous” without this having anything to do with the relationship with God or the desire to fulfill His purposes. And finally Lamech’s song makes clear that sinful nature, revealing that he had killed someone very special and that his fame for this would surpass the crime committed by his great-great-grandfather[7]. Who did he kill? and what crime would make him more famous than Cain?: The answer lies only in Cain himself.

Apparently Adam taught Seth, his third son, about God and possibly both of them taught Enos. It was at this very special moment for humanity that men began to invoke, in a kind of personal or collective worship, the only one who deserves all glory and honor. So as a cult of sin itself (of man himself) grew, so did a cult of the one true God.

Questions:

1.- If the spiritual world is divided, in what way does Satan manifest himself in the world?

2.- What difference can you find between a true friend and an acquaintance?

3.- Why do you think Adam says he will continue to eat? Wasn’t what had happened up to that point enough for him?

4.- Have you ever been tempted by evil? How?

5.- What consequences of sin do you perceive in the world today?

5.- Why do you think the woman’s name was first Varona and then changed to Eve?

[1] Due to the Latin translation known as the Vulgate, his name became known as Lucifer. Studies of ancient scriptures have shown that in ancient times for the Mesopotamian peoples the phrase “the sons of El” referred to “the cattle owners,” who were people worshippers of the bull-god (El); while the phrase “the daughters of Adam” referred to “the women of Adamah (the earth),” but adamah for them was not only earth but also the goddess of agriculture. These ‘daughters of Adama’ were notorious for their (prostitution as a ritual). At that time it was common to find sexual priestesses who served in temples, it is possible that this is where the story of ‘El’ seducing two mortal women comes from, and they are giving him semi-divine children, called in Akkadian Shalem (‘perfect’), and Shahar (‘dawn’), who possessed wings (as described in Psalm 139:9). His son was this harmful being named Heilel (Isaiah 14:12b-15; Ezek 28:12-19).

[2] Gen 3:1.

[4] Gen 3:7-13.

[5] Gen 3:15.

[6] Gen 6:3-7, 11-12

[7] The word haragtí (הָרַגְתִּי) translated as past ‘I will kill’ is actually a perfect Qal verb, so it should be read as something past: ‘I killed’.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face
you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

20 The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

22 Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

Genesis 4.

Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.” 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. 3 In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. 6 The LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, and you must rule over it.”

8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?” 10 And the LORD said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” 13 Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 Then the LORD said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him. 16 Then Cain went away from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

17 Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. When he built a city, he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. 19 And Lamech took two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 20 Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. 22 Zillah also bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23 Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. 24 If Cain’s revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech’s is seventy-sevenfold.”

25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.” 26 To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD.

To The Choirmaster. A Psalm of David, When Nathan The Profet Went To Him, After He Had Gone In To Bathsheba.

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation,
and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

18 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem; 19 then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Romans 5.

1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. 17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6.

1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
