I- Beware of society’s standards.

The peoples of Ammon and Moab manifested a total discredit, as to their moral quality, when they refused to give bread and water to the people of Israel. This is one of the reasons why God forbade any of these nations to be part of His people at some point. Analyzing this lack of social harmony is very difficult if one considers that Lot, father of these peoples, risked his life to protect the “strangers” who came to Sodom. How is it possible that this moral quality disappeared completely within a few generations?

The answer lies in another question: Why would a person with such qualities persist in living with those in Sodom? Every person can act according to his own standard and this is sown from his upbringing, amid the influences of his environment and from his natural inclinations. Therefore, he who grows up in an environment that facilitates interrelation with God’s Word and in contact with patterns of behavior, receives his chief reward for acting in accordance with that in which he was educated. However, those good deeds that are carried out only because “that’s how we were taught to do them”, lose a good part of their effectiveness.

Some of the ancient commentators claim that Lot did not pass on this teaching because he did so through habits learned in his family, but which never became part of his qualities. This is a biblical speculation, and we should not believe it at all if we do not have evidence given by God, but from this we can learn something very important: We cannot do things just because it has always been that way, but we must internalize what we do.

How can the force of habit be counteracted when it is greater than a genuine desire of the heart? Well, with a complete devotional life that depends on interaction with the Holy Spirit. Of course, this implies a battle of perseverance and dependence on God that is often hindered by daily life or discouragement, but at the same time we must set our sights on the certainty that the One who began the good work will perfect it.

II- Exploit the good potential of your home.

It is not good to look at the Bible from just one perspective; Let’s look at this previous matter from another angle and learn from it. Why does Scripture equate inhospitality with the hiring of Balaam? Can the former be compared with the latter? If they inherited good qualities of hospitality from their father Lot, then it means that their rebelliousness was so great that they went against their own principles. This causes them to fall into the sin of rebellious children, of which God had already given commandment.

From this you can learn how harmful it is to go against the good qualities that are learned at home. It can also be learned that a person is judged by God by the things that happen inside his being and not by what everyone sees, which is why he says that evil thoughts come out of the heart (Mt 15:19).

Another lesson is that every person is judged strictly when he breaks the areas where he should be strongest. The opposite of all the above would be to strengthen and make constant use of those strong qualities that make up our behavior.

III- Influencing for God.

It is also interesting to analyze why they specifically denied water and bread. The point is that this represents to this day the essential thing that human beings need to live. So, what their conscience dictated to them was precisely to deny them the essentials to live, although they did not have the courage to take their lives themselves; that is: I want you to die soon, although I do not have the courage to kill you!

The hatred and fear of the people of Israel overcame that trait of natural goodness that human beings should have by giving the needy the essentials for life and they did the opposite.

That is why a person must work on his natural inner strength and align it with the requirements that God teaches in his commandments, otherwise he will end up wasting or misusing what makes him a good person.

Imagine what they could have achieved if they had allowed their goodness trait to act to its fullest potential. If they went out and offered bread and water to a people who were coming back to their land, fleeing slavery or death, the Bible would probably have recorded that great act of kindness for eternity and obviously they would have been allowed to enter God’s people at some point.

How can we apply the latter to our reality? Very simple, don’t miss the opportunity that everything that comes to your hand to do is to do things for the good of others. For example, a person who has the possibility of preaching in a congregation should use this to teach what is right, even if he is not in the teaching ministry there.

That is why we urge you to acquire the books of this DIC-DAC discipleship and invite to your home or any other place brothers or unsaved people who want to do so and teach them the truths of God. Take on this challenge!
