I- Man is an integral being.

Man was made from that land (Adamah) which God had separated from the land (eretz) into which Satan fell[1]. This is how he is made without any contamination, even though there was already chaos around him as a result of sin.

The fact that man is the only being capable of making conscious decisions shows us that he is made in the image of God[2]. Now, if it was also made from adamah powder, we can conclude that it is an integral (material and spiritual) being. This means that God created him materially to relate to the world around him, and spiritually to relate to Him and everything around him in a conscious way[3].

Interpreters often try to find out what the phrase “image and likeness” refers to only on the basis of the etymologies of both words. However, the passage itself as its context is concerned with giving us a guide. The question to better understand would be: Why does man need the image and likeness of God? The text responds with various actions: “And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth“. But these have also been very misinterpreted, as they are seen only as synonyms for a call for humans to grow numerically and dominate its environment. Without realizing that, if this is seen as such, then there is no difference between humans and the rest of the material creation where the fittest dominates the least fit. Now, if everything starts from the “image and likeness” of God that has been placed in man and that makes him different from the rest of the created on earth, these actions must have a different origin and result compared to the other beings that have life, the animals. Let’s look at some details:

    • “And God blessed them” (refers to having the ability to be humble when receiving adoption[4]).
    • “Be fruit” (aims to have the ability to transmit or influence others with good fruits).
    • “Multiply” (points to the ability to extend oneself in others[5]).
    • “Fill the earth” (is the ability to make the earth fulfill the purpose for which it was created[6]).
    • “Subdue it” (it is the ability to build even when it seems that something is being broken or destroyed).
    • “Have dominion ” (refers to the ability to persevere, fighting it is necessary, with the rest of creation, in order to establish the image and likeness of God).

II- The best work team and influence on earth.

God, who knows all the needs of each adam even when man himself cannot comprehend them, created woman to be the most effective team on earth (marriage). [7] When both succeed in meeting and uniting, they can not only understand the mystery of love, but also the mystery of the relationship between God and his people, between Christ and the church. Paul explained it like this:

“Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.” (Eph 5:21–33).

Adam was challenged to leave behind his fears and delusions so that his marriage would fly high. How much time of solitude could influence Adam not to make his marriage happy, it was his turn to do this. Hitherto he had dealt with impersonal beings in Eden and his heavenly Father was guiding him, but the challenge now with this one who was equal to him was to lead her and become one flesh with her. It wasn’t so much trying to mold Eve to be what he wanted, but to change and mature him so that they would both harmonize in the image and likeness of God. He also had to find out who Eve was and allow her to meet him.

Marriage is one of the best opportunities to grow, overcome selfishness, and learn to love.

    Questions:

1.- Is man just a more evolved animal? Why?

2.- What do you think is so special about what God breathed into man?

3.- What do you think will happen to a man who manifests the 6 capacities of Godlikeness?

4.- Why do you think that woman was made of the rib and not of the head or feet?

5.- Why do you think Jesus says, “What God joined together I did not separate man“? (Matt. 19.6).

6.- What might happen in the setting of a God-like marriage?

[1] The Hebrew word for ‘man’ is adam and the word for the ‘earth’ from which he was formed is adamah. This special land differs from that (eretz) from which a steamer rose to water it.

    [2] Gen 1:26.

    [3] Gen 2:7.

[4] The Hebrew word yebarech (יְבָרֶךְ), although translated as ‘to bless’ (good saying), finds the root of its meaning more precisely in ‘adoption’. In other words, God adopts us as his own and, therefore, we are “blessed”. Then He is the Blessed One because in Him there are many adopted.

[5] The word rebú (רְבוּ), when translated as multiply, loses much of its root which comes from the action of ‘shooting an arrow’, because by doing this the person extends to a distance beyond himself. So in this passage we can say that it refers to the ability to extend or duplicate in others. This can be done through discipleship or influencing others.

[6] The word milu (מִלְאוּ) refers to a ‘filling’, but always as a consequence of a ‘fullness’ that extends to ‘satiate’. Animals through their very nature are called to fill the earth in quantity, while humans must extend themselves through their qualitative influence. Once this is accomplished, the earth comes to fulfill its purpose for which it was created.

    [7] Gen 2:22-25.
