Day 4: Proverbs 17-18

Day 5: Romans 15:22-33

Day 6: 2 Corinthians 11

I- The guilt of leadership.

At the end of this portion there is a somewhat strange commandment that when they found a corpse abandoned in the field, the elders of the nearest city were to go out and declare, “Our hands have not shed this blood, nor have our eyes seen it.” At first this seems absurd, because they were not the ones who murdered this person, why should they declare what is more than obvious? From this it can be learned that the leaders of any group are responsible for everything that happens around them.

Being a spiritual leader of God’s people is not a matter of honor or reputation; it is an awesome burden that makes you responsible for everything that happens in your service. For example, parents are responsible for their children, teachers are responsible for their students, we are all responsible for each other.

When something is wrong among those who supervise or guide, the first thing to do is to ask God for forgiveness, including oneself, and then act on the situation.

Analyzing the spiritual repercussions of this specific mandate we can see an analogy in the contemporary world. Multitudes of congregations are disappearing due to today’s postmodernist assimilation. What does local leadership do about it? How many can truly testify to having offered all the spiritual nourishment and refuge that the church is called to give? If we are all guardians of our brothers and sisters and responsible for one another, we should be willing to ask forgiveness on behalf of the entire congregation when someone goes astray from the faith[1]. This will make us more engaged and therefore more aware of reality.

From this commandment we learn that many times, even if there are no visible culprits in a situation, instead of the leadership starting to create an espionage network or give rein to speculative gossip, the attitude of the leaders should be to go to prayer, ask forgiveness in the name of all to God and wait on Him. The Lord could take vengeance on the guilty, but also use the church’s testimony as an impact of love and responsibility on the guilty to bring him to reflection and change.

Questions:

1.- Contrast the teaching of this portion with Gen. 4:9.

2.- What does your local church do to nurture its members? (If you don’t know, ask other brothers, and if they don’t know, ask the local leaders of your church.)

3.- How do you contribute to this precious work of nurturing others?

4.- What would you recommend to your local leaders to increase your church’s results? (Avoid pointing out what is not being done or is being done wrong, unless it is to ask God for forgiveness, on his behalf and on behalf of the church.)
