I- Cutting-edge leadership.

Zebulun (זְבוּלוּן) means ‘to honor or judge’, while Issachar (יִשָּׂשכָר) means ‘there is a reward’. Both tribes served under the banner of the Lion of Judah, a triad that recalls the basic elements of a ministerial alliance: Judah (leader), Zebulun (spiritual supporter), and Issachar (spiritual guide). The first gives balance to the team, provides decisions, is a mediator, provides the vision of the team and assumes responsibilities. The second supports everyone, encourages, represents unconditional obedience to the vision and is the soul of the team, his mere presence indicates that he is doing well. The third guides, considering God’s commandments, counsels about the clarity of every action in harmony with Scripture and helps to keep emotions from controlling the team. Overall, this would be the vanguard leadership of the entire nation of Israel.

II- A shared ministry.

Someone once said that this is the first Bible study society, because through the history of these tribes it was seen how (Zebulun) provided forces through maritime trade so that the other (Issachar) would spend time studying the Torah. Both shared the earnings of their work, one economic and the other spiritual (100/100). How much one must learn from this that when we support and build each other up we all reap from it.

III- When no one was talking about evangelism.

It is good to note here that there was something very important and not much attention is paid to when studying the biblical text and the nation of Israel. Zebulun was the first to export the culture of divine legislation (evangelism) through trade. When we look at all the kingdoms that helped and provided for the construction of the temple, their monarchs eager to meet Solomon, and then the empires eager to conquer such a prosperous nation, we must recognize that this was thanks to the difference that this tribe made in their travels around the world. And that message they conveyed of sincerity and prosperity was also due to the biblical light that Issachar offered him.

In the same way, it must be very clear that when the nation declined it was due to the failure of leadership and this, as we have seen, was based on the triad: Judah, Zebulun and Issachar. Sadly, when the kingdom was divided, the first thing to be divided was this leadership, leaving Zebulun and Issachar in the northern kingdom and Judah in the south. Never again was the nation the same.

Questions:

1.- How do you envision this “ministerial triad” being able to strengthen a local church today?

2.- What impact do you think it would have for the gospel if a large part of Jesus’ ministry took place in the land of Zebulun?

3.- How could a type of evangelism be implemented in your local church that mimics the way God used Zebulun and Issachar as a light to the nations?
