Dan (דָּן) means ‘judgment’. It was the tribe that led the northern battalion under the banner of the eagle (Deuteronomy 32:11), in the southern part under that of Reuben. Gad (גד) means ‘good luck or fortune’.

The blessing was before Dan all the time; like an eagle he must have a long view of his actions. That is why Moses wished in his blessing to describe him as a lion cub, immature and playful who spends his time jumping. It can be said that they were the first within the nation who did idolatry by stealing other gods and systematizing this sin until their captivity came. This is why it is not mentioned in 1 Chronicles 1-9, nor in Revelation. This is why most interpreters believe that their salvation will be for the end times, beyond the days of the remnant of the 144,000, fulfilling Jacob’s words: “I waited for your salvation, O Lord.”[1]

For his part, Gad wanted to inherit that land because it was prosperous for cattle raising, but Moses reveals here the real intention on which they were to focus: “He chooses the best of the land for himself, for there the portion of the lawgiver was reserved for him.». They should take care of the last place where they saw Moses and where he was buried. Also, with the future desire to see him soon in the resurrection of the dead.
